Dr Dental – Advancements in Dental Fillings
What is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling is a restorative material to repair teeth damaged by decay or trauma. The filling material replaces the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth, restoring its shape, function, and strength. Several dental fillings are available, including composite resin, amalgam, gold, and ceramic. The choice of filling material depends on the damage’s extent, the tooth’s location, and the patient’s personal preferences. Dental fillings are a standard procedure and are typically done in a single visit to the dentist.
Advancements in Dental Fillings: Resin Infiltration Fillings
Most dental patients have not heard of this type of filling because it is new and on the cutting edge of dental restoration advancements. This method includes using a thin, perforated sheet to slide between the teeth with a dental cavity. A special gel is then pushed into the cavity to clean it of bacteria thoroughly. Next, the filling resin is applied to the cavity. The resin dries quickly using a special dental curing light, causing it to set and become solid between the teeth.
With resin infiltration, there is no pain to the patient and no need for anesthetics or drilling. Due to its nature, this treatment is perfect for filling cavities between the teeth but is generally not used for decay in more accessible parts of the tooth.
