Why Buy Dental Insurance? – DrDental.com

07/15/22

If you do not receive dental insurance though your employer, it can be often times not thought about.  However, having dental insurance will help make dental care more affordable.   Yet why should you buy dental insurance when you may feel all you are having done are cleaning and have no real need for dental insurance to help you with that. The fact is if all you are having are basic dental cleanings you may feel like the cost of dental insurance would excess the cost of the dental services.

However what happen when you need more then just a basic cleaning?  What if you brake a tooth or dental decay goes treated and causes large dental services to be needed.  That when you will be wishing you had some dental insurance in place.  Many dental insurance plans that let you pick and choose your own dentist also come with long waiting periods.  Making buying those plans important to do so before you required larger dental care.   People that do not have dental insurance tend to put off their dental care.  In turn requiring larger dental services do to defer treatment, making their dental care cost go up even more.

People that have dental insurance tend to see their dentist for the twice a year check ups and cleaning since in many cases this is a free service under their insurance plan. In addition since these people are seeing a dentist regularly they are also able to avoid having larger dental care needs there by saving money on their overall dental health care cost.  So the real question is why are you not buying dental insurance?

Dental decay is one of the most common chronic illness among children. Although it has been established that poor dental and oral health care is also an integral component of children’s overall health and well-being. Still many children do not receive the dental care recommended. Difficulties in obtaining dental care disproportionately affect low-income and minority children.

Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) are major sources of dental coverage, reaching millions of low-income children, but inadequate access to dental care among these children remains a critical health policy challenge

Homeopathic Teething Remedies are They Safe?

While some parents may swear by homeopathic teething drops and tablets. Many pediatricians however, claim that the risks of homeopathic treatments far outweigh any potential benefits. While homeopathic treatments are required by the US FDA to meet certain standards for strength, purity, and packaging, they’re not rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness the way prescription and over-the-counter medications are. Therefor before using a homeopathic remedy, one should check with your child’s doctor or the FDA, which has recalled certain homeopathic products due to safety concerns.

Stop and Think Twice if a Dentist Says Not to Get Dental Insurance – Dr Dental

06/21/22

The fact is dental insurance will reduce your dental care cost at the dentist.  So why is it that some dentist will advise their patient not to buy dental insurance, stating it is not worth the cost.

Normally there is three reasons for this:

1) The dental office you went to is not a provider of any dental insurance plans, and therefore they feel you getting insurance will not help you when having  dental services done though them.

2) The dental office you went to is only a provider of PPO plans.  Therefore if you do not have a current PPO plan in place,  they know that getting one now may not workout the best for you, if  you  need more then preventive dental care services.  (This is because most PPO plans will have long term waiting periods for both basic and major dental care)

3) Because of one and two.  A dental office is still a business.   Why would a dental office advise you to buy a dental HMO plan, (that normally does not have waiting periods and are lower cost dental insurance plans) when they are not a provider of any. It not like the want to refer a dental insurance plan that will take away business from them.

This is not say that it is wrong for a dental office to advise their patient not to get dental insurance if they do not already have some.  If you put of getting dental insurance until you have larger dental needs,  and in addition you want to stay with a certain dental office,  then what they are saying could be correct in your current state.

Yet  even if that is true the question that would remain would be, is paying full cost for your dental services really want you want to continue to do ?  What if a year from now you still have larger dental issues that needs to be address.  How much better off are your really when you still do not have current dental insurance.

Therefore if you have a dentist you wish to continue to see, think about getting a dental PPO or Indemnity plan that will let you stay with your current dentist.  Even with the waiting periods it is important to think of not only want your current needs are but want your future dental needs may be.

The Changing Dental Health Care.

06/19/22

There is a field of dental therapists that may be changing dental care for those in need.  With nearly 17 million children are not getting proper dental care. Some of the reason are dental care cost is too high for many families, as well as many dentists do not accept Medicaid nationwide. In 2009 there were 830,000 visits to emergency rooms for dental problems that could have been prevented with proper preventive dental care.

With the Affordable Health Care law more children will become eligible for dental care. One expert said, taxpayers will benefit from fewer trips to the hospital. Better dental care also could improve school attendance. For example, in just California more than half a million children missed school in 2007 because of dental problems.

California and other states are searching for new ways to help meet the demand, including the use of dental therapists. However, many dentists do not agree with that decision.  They say dental therapists do not have enough education and training to perform surgical procedures such as filling cavities or pulling teeth.

In 2005 Alaska became the first state to use dental therapists. Minnesota authorized the new profession in 2009. The first graduates of their dental therapy programs began practicing last year. California, New Hampshire, Oregon and Connecticut are considering creating programs for dental care therapists.
